Overview:
The 2008 project took place in a small community called San Jose Villanueva, located in the high
natural disaster risk zone between the cost and San Salvador.
Due to the recent Natural Disasters in the area the existing housing was in need of repair or replacement, as many of the local residents
were living in shacks that would collapse if an earthquake struck again.
The project focused on several sites around the town, constructing the proven seismically resistant housing designs for some of the more needy families.
Initially the team was split between two sites, and focused on levelling and constructing retaining walls to allow construction to begin.
As the project progressed work was commenced on other sites, with the help of the local labour.
By the time the team left the steel frame had been completed on one of the houses, with the bamboo being placed. Many of the other sites were also in a good
position for the locals to continue the building process.
The team carried out the project in conjunction with REDES, ADES (The Association for Socio-Economic Development) and CIRES (Committee of
Integration andReconstruction for El Salvador).
