The 2007 Project

Location: Santa Marta, Victoria, Pepeto
Year: 2007
Team Size: 13
Duration: 6 weeks

Overview:
In 2007 a team of 13 Imperial students returned to Santa Marta, where the previous year's team had helped construct a new double story school classroom and a local nursery.

This year the Team were working with six different families to construct new housing and sanitation units, replacing their existing dilapidated houses.

The project was a great success and on departure the Team had completely finished the bamboo on one of the houses, and finished at least half on the other five houses. In the final weeks of the project the Team concentrated on one house because it belonged to the most needy family - an old couple who could not reasonably finish a house by themselves. It also provided a model house for the other families to copy.

In addition one sanitation unit was started, and one cement-lined drainage ditch was designed and built as an example, to reduce erosion around the foundations and dampness in the walls. The team carried out the project in conjunction with REDES, ADES (The Association for Socio-Economic Development) and CIRES (Committee of Integration andReconstruction for El Salvador).
