Overview:
In 2006 a team of 13 Imperial students travelled to Santa Marta, which had been abandoned and destroyed during the civil war.
The community has since returned and now has approximately 1000 families, however the schooling facilities were cramped and in need of renewal.
Work at Santa Marta was split between two sites. At La Escuela they began construction of a new two story school building, and at La Guarderia the
team began preparations for the increase in capacity and improved facilities of the local nursery.
The team later worked at sites at Victoria and Pepeto. At Victoria they began the renewal of the much loved community radio station Radio Victoria,
which included the digging and pouring of foundations, construction of blockwork walls and finally new retaining wall.
The final stage of the project was to be carried out at Pepeto, where the team undertook the construction of five concrete compost latrines,
whilst teaching the locals the construction process.
The team carried out the project in conjunction with REDES, ADES (The Association for Socio-Economic Development) and CIRES (Committee of
Integration andReconstruction for El Salvador).
