Overview:
The second project was a result of teaming up with a Salvadoran NGO, REDES.
The project was in a community called Costa Rica. All of the community buildings had been destroyed by the earthquakes,
and in addition, there were serious problems with the sanitation and water disposal in the community.
REDES had a full plan for the holistic development of the community.
The 2003 project included the construction of one concrete seismically resistant home, however, its main focus was safe water disposal.
Two children had died early in 2003 primarily due to preventable waterborne diseases.
It was thought that a contributing factor to this problem was the lack of facilities to dispose of grey water,
resulting in stagnant pools around the village.
The project, therefore, included the construction of almost fifty sealed drainage pits as well as nine pit latrines.
The project was very successful and helped to pioneer the student participation projects with REDES.
