Overview:
The first project took place in a small and very poor community called Condadillo. During the earthquakes this community and region had been
devastated. On our arrival there were almost no permanent structures in the village.
The aim of the project was to construct a seismically resistant model adobe (mud brick) building.
Many of the buildings that had been destroyed were of poorly constructed adobe.
It was hoped that the project would go some way to restore confidence in the technique.
Adobe constructed dwellings can be constructed by the occupants at a significantly reduced cost than a concrete house.
The design for the building was an adobe hybrid, encompassing several different techniques to improve the structural integrity of the building,
one of which used bamboo to reinforce the wall.
The building is now used as a pre-school day centre, however local funding issues have put its future into question.
